The Nigerian Chess team faces a uphill task against a highly rated Egyptian side in the open section of the ongoing All African Games taking place in Maputo, Mozambique . Ajibola Olanrewaju rated 2124 will be on a collision course with the 24 year old Egyptian Grand master Adly, Ahmed Rated 2605 who won the African chess championship in 2005 and the junior world Championship in 2007 . CM Charles Campbell (2008) will test his solid defense against IM Shoker ,samy (2512) ,FM Adebayo Adegoyega(2284) Small B will be playing white against IM Ezat mohammed (2434) while CM Omorere Benjamin (2223) plays the black side against IM Abdel Razik, Khaled (2424).
Nigeria will be looking forward to an upset of an obviously higher rated Egyptian side especially on Board one to three. Bunmi Olape is rested for this round for tactical reasons.
Chess is one of the events that gives Nigeria chances of medals now that the country are not doing well in sports they usually dominate. Nigerian Government and corporate bodies should consider sponsoring more chess competitions in the Country.
