Magnus Carlsen decides to quit the World Championship

Magnus Carlsen, the 19-year old Norwegian chess prodigy who is ranked #1 on the live chess ratings and widely recognized as one of the main candidates to become the next World Chess Champion, has sent an official letter to FIDE stating that he will not participate in the Candidates Matches next year.

To: FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov & FIDE World Championship Committee.

Reference is made to the ongoing World Championship cycle.

The purpose of this letter is to inform you of my decision not to take part in the planned Candidate Matches between March and May 2011.

After careful consideration I’ve reached the conclusion that the ongoing 2008–2012 cycle does not represent a system, sufficiently modern and fair, to provide the motivation I need to go through a lengthy process of preparations and matches and to perform at my best.


Reigning champion privileges, the long (five year) span of the cycle, changes made during the cycle resulting in a new format (Candidates) that no World Champion has had to go through since Kasparov, puzzling ranking criteria as well as the shallow ceaseless match-after-match concept are all less than satisfactory in my opinion.

By providing you with four months notice before the earliest start of the Candidates as well as in time before you have presented player contracts or detailed regulations, I rest assured that you will be able to find an appropriate replacement.

Although the purpose of this letter is not to influence you to make further changes to the ongoing cycle, I would like to take the opportunity to present a few ideas about future cycles in line with our input to FIDE during the December 27th 2008 phone-conference between FIDE leaders and a group of top-level players.

In my opinion privileges should in general be abolished and a future World Championship model should be based on a fair fight between the best players in the World, on equal terms. This should apply also to the winner of the previous World Championship, and especially so when there are several players at approximately the same level in the world elite. (Why should one player have one out of two tickets to the final to the detriment of all remaining players in the world? Imagine that the winner of the 2010 Football World Cup would be directly qualified to the 2014 World Cup final while all the rest of the teams would have to fight for the other spot.)

One possibility for future cycles would be to stage an 8-10 player World Championship tournament similar to the 2005 and 2007 events.

The proposal to abolish the privileges of the World Champion in the future is not in any way meant as criticism of, or an attack on, the reigning World Champion Viswanathan Anand, who is a worthy World Champion, a role model chess colleague and a highly esteemed opponent.

Rest assured that I am still motivated to play competitive chess. My current plan is to continue to participate in well-organised top-level tournaments and to try to maintain the no 1 spot on the rating list that I have successfully defended for most of 2010.

This video clip displayed above has generated a lot of controversy and has even led to the Governor of Edo state ordering a detailed investigation into the matter. While Genuine cases of harassment are still rampant in our schools and like rape cases grossly under-reported. Each case must be analyzed individually on its own merit. the video in this cases raises more questions than answers.1. What was the intention of the alleged victim (miss Judith Okosun)? 2. Why was the emphasis on money and the signing of the cheque? 3 was the lecturer being forced to co-operate under duress? 4. This looks like a case of blackmail does two wrongs make a right? 5 why is miss Judith only concern about the lecturer passing her and not that she was being victimized- we are aware of students actually going out of their way to seduce lecturer to get favors as well.
Though this is not an excuse for a lecturer as it is un-ethical whichever way it happens.
I believe there are two types of possible improper relationships between students and lecturer (A.) where the Lecturer harass an innocent student and threatens to fail her if she does not "co-operate" this is the most genuine case of harassment and must be seriously condemned there has to be a way by the authorities to protect students in this category ( B) Where a female student seduces a lecturer by her own free will to get academic favor from the Lecturer which is very common in schools these days. In this case the Lecturer is still a guilty party as having this kind of affair is Un-ethical.

In the video above, it appears Miss Judith from her words is only concerned about passing

Also her conduct and action in the video must be put into consideration, i doubt if they ever had the intention of making this video public, was it done mainly to blackmail and get the lecturer to sign the cheque? a lot of questions remained unanswered and i hope the outcome of the investigation will take care of that. Whatever the outcome I think the federal government needs to use this occasion to look deeply into the menace of harassment by Lecturers in our Universities but of course based on the moral decay in the society there is a Thin line between where the student seduces the lecturer and vice versa. There must be a way to protect genuine victims!! Please your opinion is important here please comment on this post to let people know your views

Father impregnates 12-year-old daughter

A 40-year-old man, who allegedly impregnated his 12-year-old daughter, has promised to father the child if her daughter is delivered safely. Philip Ben, a native of Itam in Akwa Ibom State is being interrogated at the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos.

The suspect and his daughter (names withheld) accused each other of being the mastermind of the heinous act.
 He shamelessly accepted responsibility to take care of the baby because his 'christian faith' forbids abortion, he also claimed the daughter seduced him.
'Giving a graphic account on how the incest started, the man confessed that, “one day, I came back from work and I met my daughter naked. As I was looking and admiring her, my manhood erected and I could not control myself anymore. I started caressing her but she did not resist me, so, we started the act.”
However the girl denied his and said her father drugged her by offering her a drink after which she became weak slept off and later realised she was being raped by her father. The daughter said her father had been sleeping with her since she was 10 and had sexual intercourse with her daily for two years and the last time was in March this year.

How will the12-year-old girl explain to her child that his father also the same person as  his grandfather?There are many girl children out there being abused by their father or male relative, what do you advise is the best way to stop this abuse? In this case  will an abortion be considered a sin before God?
